DREAM Activities and Events Planned for Fall, 2023
All activities are through Zoom. We provide captioning, but if you need other accommodations, please contact us. If you would like more information about any of DREAM's activities or would like to suggest an activity or event, let us know.
- Disability History Game Night: In November, 2023, DREAM will have a fun interactive event where everyone plays games while learning about disability history. This activity is happening in partnership with Easter Seals. This event was supposed to happen in the Spring of 2023, but had to be rescheduled. Download the Spring flyer for this event by clicking here.
- DREAM Author Talks: Disability, Empowerment, and Change: DREAM is inviting authors who write about disability, disability studies, and/or disability in higher education to talk about their ideas, experiences as authors, and big questions they are thinking about. There will be time for audience questions. There will be four of these this fall. Details and the Zoom link will be available by August 7 and will start after Labor Day.
- DREAM Board Recruitment and Selection: Each year in September or October, DREAM sends out a call for new student Board members. Details and the application will be available by mid-September.
- DREAM for High Schools: DREAM is currently working with consultants to develop DREAM for high school students, which we hope to pilot in the Spring of 2024. Click here to see more information.
- DREAM Listserv and Social Media: DREAM shares resources, the NCCSD Weekly News Update (which used to be the "DREAM Weekly Newsletter") and event announcements through our DREAM email listserv and our social media accounts (links are on the home page of this site). Click here to sign up for the DREAM listserv.
- DREAM Website: The DREAM website underwent a major renovation in July, 2023. Let us know if you have feedback or suggestions!
- Undergrad Chat: Students meet to talk about their experiences as undergraduate students with disabilities. It meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm Central Time. Details and the Zoom link will be available by August 1 and the group will start after Labor Day.
- Grad Chat: Students meet to talk about their experiences as graduate students studying disability and/or being a disabled graduate student. It meets the first and third Thursday of each month, 12 months of the year, at 3:00 Central Time. The Zoom link is 892 9053 5107 (no password). Click here to download a flyer with details.
- NCCSD Weekly News Updates: Every week since 2012 during the academic year, the NCCSD has sent out a Weekly News Update (formerly known as the DREAM Weekly Newsletter about Disability and Higher Education). Former DREAM newsletters and News Updates are archived online. If you'd like to receive News Updates, we recommend subscribing to our DREAM e-mail listserv or Slack channel.
- Slack: DREAM is using Slack to connect students and student groups. The DREAM Board is currently deciding whether to switch to GroupMe, Discord, or some other platform that might be more user friendly. In the meantime, sign up for our Slack channel. If we switch to another platform, everyone on Slack will be transferred there.
- Town Hall: Every semester, the DREAM Board hosts a Town Hall with all DREAM chapters and affiliates. People share what they are doing and can plan national events for all DREAM groups. People can also share issues or questions with everyone. This is closed to DREAM chapters and affiliates only. Details and the Zoom link will be available by August 1 and will occur after Labor Day.
Examples of Past DREAM Activities
- "Crip Camp" Netflix Watch Party: In 2019, DREAM hosted a Netflix Watch Party for the film "Crip Camp," about a group of kids with disabilities who met at a segregated camp for disabled kids. The movie follows the children as they grow up to become disability activists who created major legal, societal, and cultural changes related to disability.
- Disabled & Proud Conferences: DREAM held two in-person Disabled & Proud conferences for students with disabilities in 2011 and 2014. In 2018, DREAM held its first Disabled & Proud online conference. The conferences were modeled after the first Disabled & Proud conference in 1999, hosted by the world's first Disability Cultural Center at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Their purpose was, according to the Board, to help disabled students network and build community, and to help students learn ways to create change on their campuses.
- #LowOnSpoons Week: In 2020, as many campuses switched to remote learning during early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, DREAM brought students together to talk about being Low on Spoons (which means low on resources, time, energy, etc.) and how to recharge and care for each other. Click here to see information about #LowOnSpoons Week.
- Mentoring: DREAM has had mentoring projects almost every semester since it started in 2011. DREAM had group mentoring in the Spring of 2023, and we're currently figuring out which kind of mentoring the Board wants in 2024. Click here to learn more about mentoring and DREAM.
- #TeachDisabilityHistory: In 2021, DREAM hosted a panel discussion about the importance of children and adults learning history, and panelists discussed how knowing (or not knowing) disability history affected them and their ability to advocate for themselves.
